She is taken from her campus late at night, and is put in a room, in a large house, in the middle of nowhere.Robert Eastern, is a private detective working in London- a tough and moral man in his forties. He is hired by Jesss parents, to find her, after she has been missing for two months. The polices investigation has slowed down by this point, and they are not even convinced that shes been abducted or kidnapped. Robert however, is convinced, and he wont give up on her.During Jesss incarceration and ordeal, she has to find the strength within herself, to plan and put into practice her own escape- although she soon discovers shes not alone in her task... A friend, who she has a difficult relationship with, is taken as well.A breakaway cell from a European criminal network is trying to establish itself in the UK, under the leadership of a Phillipe Brousseau- and girls are taken for exploitation, as a part of its foundation and development.François Colban: a Swiss police detective, is working with Interpol, to try and break this European Network. Robert eventually crosses paths with François, as his investigation gains momentum- and they work together, admittedly for their own ends. Because of the national security side of the story too, MI5 later come into it- under the direction of a lady in her fifties- called Natalie Carpenter- and Robert comes up against the hierarchy and bureaucracy, of the British police system, as he increasingly has to balance different agencies, inside and outside of the government.Starting at the college, and with Jesss close friends and house-mates, Robert takes in student life. And his investigation soon brings him into contact with lots of different types of people- and the more nefarious- including those involved in the modelling and acting world- drama groups, community and religious organizations, and influential politicians and socialites, in his search. The format of the book, uses several different character strands- beginning with two- to form the narrative, as the story builds. With themes of identity- and duality, honesty, loyalty, and broken allegiances- there are many twists and turns, and dramatic action sequences- as Robert slowly uncovers the truth, and the case unfolds. Its a world, where people are not always what they seem, and trust isnt an easy thing to believe in.
